Hello everyone,
I would like to purchase an inexpensive netbook to try this out on, with an eye to using netbooks and LP in a large enrollment college general chemistry lab.
Any suggestions on the "best" netbook to try? I'd like to keep it as inexpensive as possible since we would need to purchase about 50 of the netbooks eventually.
BTW, I have Logger Pro installed in an ubuntu virtual machine on my MacBook (using VMWare Fusion) and it's working just fine!

I've gotten LoggerPro for Linux to work on a Dell Mini 9" (with issues, but that shouldn't be the case in future, I think). I've now got an Acer Aspire One 10" (from the Acer Seed Program - free for 30 days to schools) to fiddle with. I want to install Ubuntu 9.4 Netbook Remix on it and then LoggerPro for Linux to see how that works out. I'll let the forum know when I do get to it. (Also going to try Winders 7 RC on it, if I can!)
So far, the only real drawback I see to a Dell Mini (which was pretty cheap when I got it) is the keyboard is just different enough to be annoying. Still, as long as you don't quote or use apostrophes much, you should be OK. ;-) Other than that, I <3 my little Linux netbook!
The Acer Aspire One keyboard is the nicest of the netbooks I've tried, but XP Home doesn't work in a domain-based network (well doesn't work seamlessly), which is why usually ships on 'em.
My intent is to get a classroom set of netbooks, but I won't be doing this until the summer of 2010 (new building coming fall of 2010) if the administration approves it.

I just did exactly as you describe - Acer Aspire One with Ubuntu 9.04 Netbook Remix. I installed LP for linux and everything worked great! I havn't put it through all the paces yet, but so far everything is working smoothly.
I agree about the Aspire - it is a good little machine, and cheap! Good luck with your project!

I ended up purchasing an Eee PC901 that came with a version of Ubuntu pre-installed. I installed 9.04 instead, then Logger Pro, and it worked perfectly.
This netbook is really small - the keyboard is not really useful for any significant typing, but for data collection in lab, it would probably be OK.
The PC comes with two solid-state hard drives, a fact which is not that clear in the specs. The operating system that comes on the machine is installed on the "first" hard drive, the smaller (and faster) one. When I first installed ubuntu 9.04, it was also installed on the smaller drive. Logger Pro was automatically installed on that drive too - then the drive got pretty full (it's fairly small). I ended up re-installing both onto the larger drive, which was a little bit of a pain.
I don't know if Logger Pro would work if it's not installed on the same drive as the OS.
The little PC works well though. It's small, light and has a long-lasting battery - perfect for lab use. It was only about $300 too.

Glad to hear LoggerPro worked so well for you *grin*.
Those netbooks are pretty sweet.

I agree. The students I've seen using netbooks love them -- even models that would drive me nuts *grin*.
