Future plans for LPL
« on: August 28, 2009, 09:10:44 AM »

My department is at the point of needing to replace our lab laptops (iBook G3's mostly)

Has Vernier made any decisions yet about the future of the linux version of the software?  Clearly if we could purchase netbooks instead of notebooks it would represent a significant cost-savings.  Definitely worth exploring, if LPL is going to stick around.

Yes, I know that we could run some version of Windows on the netbooks, but for various reasons we don't want to do that on 50+ lab computers.  And I don't want to get into a discussion of Windows vs. other platforms :-)

We, of course, can't promise anything -- but we've already invested a significant amount in Linux development and don't *plan* to abandon it.

Netbooks are a nice, cost effective way to go -- as is purchasing older desktops and installing Linux.  The most important thing is to remember that we stick pretty tightly to the Ubuntu distro and that if you're using another distro, you may have to do some tweaking on your own to get it to work (see other posts here for more info).

Thanks!
