Lie Detector Testing
« on: January 17, 2007, 10:31:23 AM »

Does anybody know how to perform a lie detector test and what sensors are needed? A psychology teacher at my school wants to get the students to perform this test on each other. Any ideas? Thanks

Galvanic skin response is the common thing to test for a lie detector. Unfortunately, we do not have a sensor for this.

there was an article some years ago in Science Teacher about creating a lie detector test array

Lie detectors (aka polygraphs) measure variables related to stress. A good overview can be read at http://www.howstuffworks.com/lie-detector.htm. Common measurements taken include skin conductance (galvanic response), heart rate, blood pressure and respiration rate. Heart rate can be measured with the Exercise Heart Rate Monitor, or the EKG Sensor. Respiration Rate is measurable via the Respiration Monitor Belt used with the Gas Pressure Sensor. Blood pressure is not measurable via any Vernier sensors. Theoretically one can measure skin conductance via a voltage probe, but it would probably require some custom setup.

Other stress responses that may be of interest in a Lie Detection experiment include skin blood flow, measurable via a temperature probe on the skin (held in the hand would probably be easiest), and voice stress patterns, which you can look at via the Microphone probe, but I am unsure if it would produce any quantitative data.
