Summer Fun with Vernier Spend some time this summer playing and learning with Vernier technology. Whether you are interested in experimenting with our newest products, like the Wireless Dynamics Sensor System, or looking for professional development opportunities, we have something for you. And if you just happen to come up with an innovative use of Vernier technology that you would be willing to share, send your idea to innovativeuses@vernier.com. If we publish your activity, you will receive a $100 gift certificate for anything in our catalog. Wouldn't that be fun? Read on to find out how you can have fun this summer with Vernier technology. 1. Roller Coaster Rides and Snowboarding with our Wireless Dynamics Sensor System 2. Logger Pro 3.4.5 is now available 3. AP* Biology, AP Chemistry, and Physics/Physical Science Workshops 4. Vernier Summer Workshops 5. Measuring Stress Limits of Printer Ribbon 6. Determining the Mass of a Copper Atom 7. Making the Invisible Visible 8. Outdoor Classroom Grant Program 1. Roller Coaster Rides and Snowboarding with our Wireless Dynamics Sensor System We have had fun playing with our new Wireless Dynamics Sensor System. We have taken one on a car ride, to an amusement park, and snowboarding. We have also been studying some traditional classroom topics like frictional forces, Newton's laws, and centripetal acceleration, with some of the best results we have ever seen. See some of the data from our playing at www.vernier.com/innovate/innovativeuse61.html 2. Logger Pro 3.4.5 is now available We have just released the latest version of our Logger Pro Software (v3.4.5). This new version is required for use with the Wireless Dynamics Sensor System, Vernier and Ocean Optics Spectrometers, GPS data import, and Ohaus Adventurer Pro balances. Additional features include updates to video and still image analysis and the ability to overlay GPS and sensor data onto a Google(tm) Map. Don't forget, Logger Pro 3.4.5 is a free download for current users of Logger Pro 3. For more information, including suggestions as to who should install this new version, visit www.vernier.com/tech/lpupdates.html 3. AP Biology, AP Chemistry, and Physics/Physical Science Workshops Vernier has partnered with Ward's Natural Science & Texas Instruments, Flinn Scientific, and AAPT/PTRA to bring you subject-specific summer workshops. Each workshop has several locations across the U.S. The cost to attend each two-day workshop is only $99, which includes lunch and a lab book. For dates and locations, visit AP Biology workshops www.vernier.com/workshop/apbiology.html AP Chemistry workshops www.vernier.com/workshop/apchemistry.html Physics/Physical Science workshops www.vernier.com/workshop/physics.html 4. Vernier Summer Workshops Are you looking for some great professional development opportunities this summer? Do you want to learn more about using Vernier data-collection technology in your classroom? Then sign up for one of our 12 Vernier Summer Workshops. Strategically located throughout the U.S., our workshops offer six hours of hands-on training using Vernier technology. The cost is only $50, which includes lunch and training manual. For the dates and locations of our Summer Workshops, visit www.vernier.com/workshop/summer.html For a complete list of all our professional development opportunities, visit www.vernier.com/workshop 5. Measuring Stress Limits of Printer Ribbon Paul Lulai, physics instructor at Saint Anthony Village Senior High School in Saint Anthony Village, MN, has developed an activity to measure the stress limits of printer ribbon. Paul's students use a Vernier Motion Detector and Force Sensor to find the yield point of a single loop of ribbon. To see what his students must do to verify their results, visit www.vernier.com/innovate/innovativeuse59.html 6. Determining the Mass of a Copper Atom William Green, AP chemistry teacher at E.O. Smith High School in Storrs, CT, has his students experimentally determine the mass of a copper atom using a Vernier Current Probe. Following a procedure similar to a lab in the Advanced Chemistry with Vernier lab book, his students have been able to get good results. To find out more, visit www.vernier.com/innovate/innovativeuse58.html 7. Making the Invisible Visible Roger Delpech, biology instructor at the Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School in Elstree, England, recently authored an article in the March issue of Science School Review. (Science School Review is a publication of the Association of Science Educators, a British organization similar to NSTA.) In his article, Roger discusses innovative ways to collect data using a CO2 Gas Sensor. We were so impressed with the article, we obtained permission to republish it on our web site. Read how you can stimulate class discussion on greenhouse gases and much more at www.vernier.com/innovate/innovativeuse60.html 8. Outdoor Classroom Grant Program Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation, International Paper, and National Geographic Explorer! classroom magazine have partnered to create an outdoor classroom grant program. The purpose of the program is to provide schools with additional resources to improve their science curriculum by engaging students in hands-on experiences outside the traditional classroom. This school year, the program will award grants up to $2,000 to at least 100 schools. This is a great opportunity to enhance your environmental science offering. For details on the program, visit http://email.e-mailnetworks.com/ct/ct.php?t=1260312&c=713914828&m=m&type=3 For additional grant opportunities visit www.vernier.com/grants Special thanks to Paul Lulai, William Green, and Roger Delpech for submitting their innovative uses. Be sure to send us your ideas. We especially look forward to seeing the fun you have this summer.
