My Go!Temp is Going to the Beach
Pat Butler, Technology Facilitator at Wrightsville Beach Elementary in North Carolina, was one of the first recipients of a free Go!Temp as part of our recently completed 25th Anniversary promotion. She told us she was taking her Go!Temp to the beach to study how the temperature of seawater affects sea life, such as crabs, fish and plant growth.
What is a Go!Temp and what can I do with it?
Crystals - A Closer Look
Marti Moore, one of the co-authors of our Let's Go! Elementary Science book, created two activities that investigate crystals using a ProScope digital, handheld microscope.
In the activity "Crystal Clear Observations", the students use geometric terms to describe the shape of their crystal and try to identify what the crystal might be. During the class discussion, the students come up with their own definition of a crystal based on what they have seen.
In the activity "Crystal Creatures of Habit", the students sketch a crystal's structure (habit) and then build a model using clay and straws.

What Is It?
Christine Skipp, first-grade teacher at R.B. Hunt Elementary School in St. Augustine, Florida, had an interesting way to bridge science, literacy, and technology. Christine had kindergarten, first and second grade students use the ProScope digital, handheld microscope to capture images of objects found in the classroom and around the school. Christine prepared an interactive "What is it?" presentation she used with her class.
A Chance to Earn
Are you looking for ways to add to your data collection technology? Then you should apply for the Vernier Technology Award, an NSTA Teacher Awards program. Entries can be a tried and true lesson or a new idea of how you would like to use data-collection technology in your classroom. Applicants submit their innovative data-collection activity to NSTA for judging by a panel of experts. One of the seven $3,000 awards is presented to a K-5 teacher. Deadline for entries for the 2007 awards is October 15, 2006.
How Are You Using Your Sensors?
We look forward to hearing what the students learn. Win $100 Vernier gift certificate if we publish your story! Tell us your story.
Elementary Package Wins Award
Learning Magazine honored Vernier with the Teachers' Choice Award for the Deluxe Elementary Package. The Teachers' Choice Award is the only award program that is judged solely by teachers in the classroom.
Have a Great Year!
