Now that you have gotten the school year off to a great start, you may be looking for new ways to enhance your science curriculum. One great source of ideas is our elementary web site, http://elementary.vernier.com/061002/ Here are just a few ideas, submitted by teachers just like you, to get you thinking. 1. My Go!Temp is Going to the Beach 2. Crystals - A Closer Look 3. What is it? 4. Show and Tell - Win $100 Gift Certificate 5. 2007 Teachers' Choice Award Winner 6. A Chance to Earn 1. My Go!Temp is Going to the Beach Pat Butler, Technology Facilitator at Wrightsville Beach Elementary in North Carolina, was one of the first recipients of a free Go!Temp as part of our recently completed 25th Anniversary promotion. She told us she was taking her Go!Temp to the beach to study how the temperature of seawater affects sea life, such as crabs, fish and plant growth. We look forward to hearing what the students learn. You may have a similar story to share and we would love to hear from you. To submit your story, and get additional activities you can use with a Go!Temp, visit http://elementary.vernier.com/061002/gotemp.html 2. Crystals - A Closer Look Marti Moore, one of the co-authors of our Let's Go! Elementary Science book, created two activities that investigate crystals using a ProScope digital, handheld microscope. In the activity Crystal Clear Observations, the students use geometric terms to describe the shape of their crystal and try to identify what the crystal might be. During the class discussion, the students come up with their own definition of a crystal based on what they have seen. In the activity Crystal Creatures of Habit, the students sketch a crystal's structure (habit) and then build a model of the crystal using clay and straws. For more information on the ProScope, or to download these activities, visit http://elementary.vernier.com/061002/proscope.html 3. What is it? Christine Skipp, first-grade teacher at R.B. Hunt Elementary School in St. Augustine, Florida, had an interesting way to bridge science, literacy, and technology. Christine had kindergarten, first and second grade students use the ProScope digital, handheld microscope to capture images of objects found in the classroom and around the school. Christine prepared an interactive "What is it?" presentation she used with her class. To learn more about Christine's project and to see some of the images her students captured, visit http://elementary.vernier.com/061002/showandtell.html 4. Show and Tell - Win $100 Gift Certificate Do you have an interesting story involving Vernier technology you want to share? Our best articles come from teachers just like you. If we publish your story, we will give you a $100 Vernier gift certificate. Join Pat, Marti and Christine and share your ideas. To submit your story, visit http://elementary.vernier.com/061002/tellastory.html 5. 2007 Teachers' Choice Award Winner We are pleased to announce that Learning Magazine has recognized our Deluxe Elementary Package as a 2007 Teachers' Choice Award winner. A Chance to Earn Are you looking for ways to add to your data collection technology? Then you should apply for the Vernier Technology Award, an NSTA Teacher Awards program. Entries can be a tried and true lesson or a new idea of how you would like to use data-collection technology in your classroom. Applicants submit their innovative data-collection activity to NSTA for judging by a panel of experts. One of the seven $3,000 awards is presented to a K-5 teacher. Deadline for entries for the 2007 awards is October 15, 2006. To find out more about this program, and to see winning entries from past years, visit http://elementary.vernier.com/061002/nstaaward.html Thank you for taking a few moments to explore some ideas for using data-collection technology with your students.
