Summer Science with Vernier Summer is a great time to relax and re-energize so you will be ready for the next school year. It is also a great time to investigate new ideas and explore new technologies. Here are a few things you might want to check out. 1. An Oscillating Reaction 2. Troubleshooting a Radio 3. Technology Enhanced Elementary and Middle School Science 4. Updating to Logger Pro 3.5 and 3.6 5. Spectroscopy 101 6. Subject-Specific Training from Vernier 7. Take a Survey - Win a LabQuest 8. Vernier Summer Workshops 1. An Oscillating Reaction Joan Pease, AP Chemistry teacher at Hall High School, West Hartford, CT, has her students participate in an annual Chemistry Fair. Students design a unique experiment testing a topic that was studied during the year. Last year, two of her students, David Leer and Douglas Dell'Accio, designed a project that used the Vernier Conductivity Probe to investigate the Belousov-Zhabotinsky Oscillating Reaction. To find out more about their experiment, visit http://www.vernier.com/e-news/2007-05-08/oscillating-reaction/ 2. Troubleshooting a Radio Here is a great example of the benefits of Vernier data-collection technology over traditional methods. Vernier consultant and ham radio enthusiast Lew Malchick had to troubleshoot a problem with one of his radios. Lew checked the circuit using a traditional voltmeter, but nothing showed up. Then Lew hooked up the Vernier Differential Voltage Probe and the problem became apparent. To learn more about Lew's successful repair, visit http://www.vernier.com/e-news/2007-05-08/ham-radio/ 3. Technology Enhanced Elementary and Middle School Science The TEEMSS2 project, sponsored by the Concord Consortium, is addressing the need for inquiry-based instructional materials for elementary and middle school science that make use of data-collection technology. TEEMSS has produced 15 units keyed to the NSES and NCTM standards that can be done with any computers and sensors a school chooses to use. Every unit contains two one-week investigations, each with a discovery question, several trials, analysis, and further investigations. Currently, you can do the activities using a Go!Temp, Go!Link, and Go!Motion. LabPro support is expected in the near future. The activities are free and registration is required. For more information, visit http://www.vernier.com/e-news/2007-05-08/teemss2/ 4. Updating to Logger Pro 3.5 and 3.6 Summer is a great time to get your computers updated with the latest Logger Pro software. Here is some important information to help plan your updates. Logger Pro 3.5 will be released in just a few weeks. This version is for computers running Windows 2000, XP, or Vista, as well as Mac OS X 10.3.9 or newer. New features include support for Windows Vista, improved spectrometer functionality (including Intel Mac support), updated experiment files for the new selectable range CO2 sensor, and much more. Logger Pro 3.6 is coming in mid-August. This version of Logger Pro will include all of the 3.5 updates plus support for Vernier LabQuest. Logger Pro 3.5 and 3.6 updates are free to anyone using an earlier version of Logger Pro 3. For more details on the latest functionality available, check out the Logger Pro 3.5 release notes at http://www.vernier.com/e-news/2007-05-08/logger-pro/ 5. Spectroscopy 101 Are you wanting to get the most out of your Vernier and Ocean Optics Spectrometers? Attend this two-day workshop and learn how to use Spectrometers and Logger Pro software to conduct a series of laboratory experiments in chemistry, physics, and more. The workshop will be held August 15 & 16 at the Ocean Optics headquarters in Dunedin, Florida. The $99 workshop fee covers the cost of the SPEC 101 lab manual, which includes lab experiments with versions for Logger Pro and Ocean Optics SpectraSuite software. For more details and to register, visit http://www.vernier.com/e-news/2007-05-08/spectroscopy-101/ 6. Subject-Specific Training from Vernier Our two-day, subject-specific workshops are back by popular demand. Choose from hands-on workshops for Physics, Biology/AP* Biology (co-sponsored by Vernier, TI, and Wards), and AP* Chemistry (co-sponsored by Vernier and Flinn). Registration fee is $99 and includes a Vernier lab book. The workshops will be held in Dallas (late June), Chicago (mid-July), and Washington D.C (early August). For registration information and complete details, check our web site at http://www.vernier.com/e-news/2007-05-08/subject-specific/ 7. Take a Survey - Win a LabQuest We need your help in improving the professional development offerings from Vernier. This five-minute survey will help us better understand what you look for in professional development. Complete the survey and you will be entered into a drawing to win a new LabQuest, our color, touch-screen interface. To take the survey, go to http://www.vernier.com/e-news/2007-05-08/survey/ To find out more about LabQuest, visit http://www.vernier.com/e-news/2007-05-08/labquest/ 8. Vernier Summer Workshops Are you looking for training using Vernier technology? Join us at one of our 16 full-day professional development workshops held in cities throughout the U.S. Learn how to integrate Vernier data-collection technology into your science and math curriculum. The $50 registration fee covers lunch and workshop materials. You can also bundle your training with the purchase of data-collection equipment. And while you are there, be sure you try out the new Vernier LabQuest. For specifics, visit http://www.vernier.com/e-news/2007-05-08/summer-workshops/ Do you have a story that demonstrates the benefits of Vernier data-collection technology? Send it to innovativeuses@vernier.com. If we publish your story, you will receive a $100 gift certificate you can use when purchasing a LabQuest or other Vernier technology. Special thanks to Joan Pease and Lew Malchick for submitting their innovative uses.
