Whether it is mapping the bottom of a lake, a video from YouTube, or a Vernier workshop, there is sure to be something for you. 1. Mapping Mission 2. YouTube Science Videos 3. Multi-Wavelength Linear Regression Analysis 4. LabQuest at the School of Science and Technology 5. Free LabQuest Sample Activities 6. Win a LabQuest at NSTA National Conference in Boston 7. Spring Training - with Vernier 1. Mapping Mission Brillion Middle School Earth science teachers, Ryan Peterson and Matt Van Thiel, have their students use Motion Detectors to create a topographic map. Based on the Earth Science with Vernier activity "Ocean Floor Mapping", this activity has students measure the depth of a simulated lake bed that Ryan and Matt created in their classroom. http://www.vernier.com/e-news/2008-03-12/mapping-mission/ 2. YouTube Science Videos If you needed a legitimate reason to visit one of the web's fastest growing sites, YouTube, here it is - science videos, and lots of them. Aside from the now legendary Mentos/Diet Coke demonstrations, a cursory search of YouTube will reveal an ever-lengthening list of videos that display good, solid science. Here are two articles we discovered lurking in YouTube: Strength of a strand of hair (could be done with a Dual-Range Force Sensor): http://www.vernier.com/e-news/2008-03-12/hair-strand-strength/ Conductivity of Mountain Dew (easily done with our Conductivity Probe): http://www.vernier.com/e-news/2008-03-12/mountain-dew-conductivity/ 3. Multi-Wavelength Linear Regression Analysis Vernier consultant, Walter Rohr, is always coming up with creative ways to use Vernier technology. He recently came across an article describing a spectrophotometric analysis of a mixture where the components have overlapping spectra. The method known as Multi-Wavelength Linear Regression Analysis is easily done using a Vernier Spectrometer and Logger Pro software. Walter used this method to analyze the amount of copper and nickel in a U.S. five-cent coin. To find out more about MLRA and Walt's experiment, visit http://www.vernier.com/e-news/2008-03-12/mlra/ 4. LabQuest at the School of Science and Technology We had an opportunity to video LabQuest in action at the School of Science and Technology in Beaverton, OR. Chemistry teacher Hector Morales introduced his class to LabQuest while working on an Acid-Base Titration lab. We were thrilled to see how easily the students adapted to using LabQuest. You can hear what Hector and his students had to say about using LabQuest at http://www.vernier.com/e-news/2008-03-12/hector-video/ 5.
