Graphical Analysis for iPad User Guide

Getting Started

When you launch Graphical Analysis for the first time, you are presented with “Quick Tips” to guide you through the basics of using Graphical Analysis to analyze, annotate, and export data. Return to Quick Tips at anytime by tapping the Settings button  in the top-right corner of the screen.

Collect Data

On first launch, Graphical Analysis is configured to use the built-in iPad accelerometers. The source button indicates that Built-in Sensors are online. Tap the Collect button  to start data collection. Rotate the iPad to change the accelerometer values in the graph. Now, tap the Stop button  to stop data collection.

Examine Data

Tap anywhere on the graph to examine the x- and y-axis values for the collected data points. Drag the flag to move the examine tool horizontally. Tap the flag to bring up Selection Options, where you can enter a text annotation for the point.

Select a Range of Data

Drag across the graph to select a range of data. Tap a flag to bring up Selection Options. Statistics are ON by default. Tap Add to display statistics for the selected region.

Annotations and Fits

Tap either flag for a selected region to bring up Selection Options. These options include adding a Text Annotation, displaying Statistics, and adding a Curve Fit for the selected region. There are several options for the Curve Fit:

  1. Proportional
  2. Linear
  3. Quadratic
  4. Power
  5. Variable Power
  6. Inverse
  7. Inverse Squared
  8. Nth Inverse
  9. Natural Exponent
  10. Natural Log

Adjust the left and right boundaries for the region by dragging the respective flag. To move the entire selection, tap and hold anywhere in the selection for a few seconds, then drag left or right.

Tap the Information button  to bring up the Graph Options, where you can add a Title or Caption and change the appearance of the graph (Points, Lines, or Both).

Graph Data

Zoom in or out on the graphed data by placing two fingers on the graph and stretching or pinching the graph, respectively. A thumbnail graph indicates the visible region with a focused rectangle. To return to an autoscaled view of the data, tap the thumbnail in the top-right corner. To minimize the graph thumbnail, tap the button at its top right corner. Tap again to restore it.

Tap the View button  to display 1, 2, or 3 graphs.

To choose a variable for the x-axis, tap the x-axis label. Then, choose a variable from the list.

To view the available data traces, tap the y-axis drawer button . Displayed graph traces are checked. To add or remove a graph trace from the graph, tap on the graph trace to add or remove the checkmark. Tap the drawer button again to close the drawer and return to the graph.

Save Data

Graphical Analysis automatically stores any session with selections or annotations. Tap the History button  to bring up a history of sessions auto-saved in Graphical Analysis. Sessions are labeled with their source and creation date. Tap any session to open it. Your saved selections and annotations are restored, and you can perform additional data analysis.

To delete a session, touch and hold a session until the delete button  appears.  Tap the delete button  on sessions you wish to delete. Tap elsewhere to leave the deletion view.

Export Data

Tap the Export button  to export graphs or data. Choose Graphs to create an image of the currently-displayed graph or graphs, which you can save to the Camera Roll, open in another app, email, print, or share via iTunes. Choose Data to create a comma-separated values (CSV) file, which you can open in another app, email, or share via iTunes.

Table and Meter Views

Tap the View button  to display available views of the data. Tap the Table button to view collected data in a table. Tap the Meters button to view live digital readouts from connected sensors.

Manual Data Entry

You can use the table to manually enter data for graphing and analysis. Tap the Source button in the top-left corner of the screen and then choose Manual Entry from the Built-in/Manual Sources list.

Use the following operations to create and manipulate the data:

  1. To edit the title or units for a column, double-tap the column header. Tap outside the view to save changes and dismiss.
  2. To edit cell contents, tap on the cell. A numeric keyboard appears for data entry.
  3. To add a data column, tap the New Column button  next to the rightmost column.
  4. To select multiple cells, tap and hold on a single cell, then drag to select adjacent cells.
  5. To select an entire column or row, tap the column header or row header, respectively.
  6. To select the entire table, tap the blank cell in the top-left corner of the table.
  7. You can perform the following actions on selected data. The options appear above the selection.
  1. Cut: Remove the contents and place them in the clipboard. When you cut a row or column, it is also removed from the table.
  2. Copy: Copy contents to clipboard
  3. Paste: Paste contents from clipboard. Place the cursor in the top-left cell of the desired paste region.
  4. Delete: Remove rows or columns from the table.

Data Sharing Sources

In addition to collecting data with built-in sensors and manually entering data, you can also use Graphical Analysis to connect to a Data Sharing source, such as LabQuest 2 or Logger Pro, for real-time data collection. For information on setting up Data Sharing in Logger Pro, see: http://www.vernier.com/til/2818/

Collect Data with LabQuest 2

  1. Connect LabQuest 2 and iPad to the same Wi-Fi network.
  2. Tap the Source button in the top-left corner. Discovered Data Sharing Sources will be listed automatically.
  3. Tap the name of the LabQuest 2 source to connect.
  4. If your LabQuest 2 source is not listed in Data Sharing Sources, you can connect by choosing Specify a Source or Scan Source QR Code.

For more information on setting up LabQuest 2 Data Sharing, see: LabQuest 2 User Manual.

Troubleshoot

Additional help information is located in the Settings menu, accessible from the Settings button . Choose Network Information to view details for the Wi-Fi connection and discovered Data Sharing sources.
