A lot of instructors who make the switch tell us that having something that does not make noise is a big improvement to the classroom environment. Modern dynamics carts make for very low friction experiments, so there is no longer a need for added expense, noise, and apparatus involved with setting up an air track.

There is also a pedagogical advantage in that some students who have only used air tracks leave with the mistaken impression that the levitating carts represent “special” motion that only occurs in the physics lab. Since the low-friction carts with wheels look more like automobiles, they tend to believe that the motion of the cart is “more real” and also applies to everyday life.

Many of our sensors can work with air tracks, so whether or not you phase out the air tracks or move to dynamics tracks depends on your budget, timeline, and personal preferences.

Of particular note is the Go Direct® Sensor Cart (GDX-CART-Y), which can be used on a track or on any flat surface. The Sensor Cart’s flexibility and low cost may be a deciding factor in favor of tracks.
