Basic Data Analysis in Logger Pro

Data analysis is one of the core features of Logger Pro. You can better understand your data - and the science it represents - using the Examine, Tangent, and Statistics analysis tools.

One of the core features of Logger Pro is the ability to analyze data. This video cover some basic data analysis features.

In a Logger Pro experiment file, data is typically displayed in a data table and plotted on a graph. While the data table is great for seeing details in the data and the graph is great for seeing all the data at once, sometimes you'll want to know the details while viewing the graph. Logger Pro has an easy tool for doing this...the examine tool.

The examine tool is accessed most easily from the shortcut bar. Examine brings up a small dialog box showing the details of each data point as you move back and forth over the graph. I'll often use the examine tool to quickly find a maximum or minimum value. Similar to the examine tool, the tangent tool displays the value in the small dialog box. In this case, the slope of the curve at the current data point. It places a short line segment on the graph to help visualize that slope. This feature is particularly useful for understanding rates of change. For instance, here the tangent line is fairly shallow and the ball's height isn't changing very quickly. On the other hand, at this point, it's fairly steep meaning the ball is moving quickly.

You can always move around this dialog box by mousing over until the cursor changes to the hand icon and then clicking and dragging. Likewise, if you right click on it, you can bring up an options menu and change the size of the font. Once you're done and want to remove the dialog box, just click on the X in the upper left-hand corner.

A quick way to get a lot of information all at once is to use the statistics feature. Statistics, like examine and tangent, are used quite a bit and can be found on the shortcut bar. Statistics gives the maximum, minimum, mean, standard deviation, and delta, or change in the minimum to maximum, as well as the number of samples shown. As I've done it here, these statistics apply to all the data shown on this graph.

If I want to narrow that down to a particular region, I can click and drag these black brackets. The black brackets show how much data is included in the statistics. Alternately, I can click and drag on the graph first to highlight a region and then apply statistics. Using just the examine, tangent, and statistics tools, you can perform quite a bit of data analysis to better understand your data and the science it represents.
