Agricultural Science Teachers Honored with Prestigious Awards

Case 4 Learning

At the 2019 National Association of Agricultural Educators (NAAE) Convention, three outstanding educators were presented with prestigious awards from Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education (CASE).

CASE is a project started by the National Council for Agricultural Education that strives to implement a national curriculum with enhanced rigor, science inquiry, and hands-on experience in agricultural science education. The CASE Innovation Award highlights a creative teaching approach in presenting the CASE curriculum, while the Model School Award celebrates a school program that represents CASE in its truest form.

Bibiana Gifft of Baker Technical Institute in Baker City, Oregon, received the CASE Innovation Award, while Randi and Joshua Krieg of Goldendale High School in Goldendale, Washington, received the CASE Model School Award. As a sponsor of these awards, Vernier Software & Technology supplies $1,000 in equipment to each school.

Bibiana Gifft
Baker Technical Institute in Baker City, Oregon

Bibiana Gifft, an agriculture instructor at Baker Technical Institute uses CASE lessons with 4th, 5th, and 6th graders to help students engage with hands-on technology and inquiry-based learning during the Baker Technical Institute summer STEM camps. In addition to her work in the classroom, Gifft mentors agricultural students in preparing for college. CASE courses at Baker High School are articulated with Treasure Valley Community College, allowing students to earn college credit in high school. Thanks to this partnership—and Gifft’s hard work—Baker agriculture students have received a total of 494 college credits.

Randi and Joshua Krieg
Goldendale High School in Goldendale, Washington

The recipients of the CASE Model School Award have used the CASE model to help sharpen students’ science, mathematics, and critical-thinking skills. Between them, Randi and Joshua Krieg hold nine CASE course certifications (out of ten), allowing Goldendale High School to offer all four CASE pathways: Agricultural Engineering, Animal Science, Plant Science, and Natural Resources. Goldendale students can earn up to five credits in agricultural science at Yakima Valley Community College thanks to an articulation agreement. Student success in CASE courses is also translating into higher performance in other STEM disciplines as well, including biology.
