Bring Biology Concepts to Life with the Go Direct® CO2 and O2 Gas Sensors

In biology courses, students tend to learn about big-picture concepts that can be difficult to comprehend, such as cellular respiration, photosynthesis, and cellular metabolism.

With the Go Direct CO2 Gas Sensor (which measures gaseous carbon dioxide concentration levels, air temperature, and relative humidity) and the Go Direct O2 Gas Sensor (which measures gaseous oxygen concentration levels and air temperature), students can go from reading about these concepts in a textbook to seeing them in action.

For example, students can use the Go Direct CO2 Gas Sensor to observe carbon dioxide levels increasing during cellular respiration and decreasing during photosynthesis—and they can observe the opposite with the Go Direct O2 Gas Sensor.

Put another way, these sensors can help make the abstract real. They also provide both K–12 and college educators with a flexible, affordable way to bring biology concepts to life for their students.

Experiment ideas for the Go Direct CO2 Gas Sensor include

  • Measure the change in gas concentration during cellular respiration.
  • Measure the change in gas concentration during photosynthesis.
  • Study the effect of temperature on cell respiration or metabolism of organisms.
  • Investigate artificial selection in yeast by comparing respiration rates of different strains.

Experiment ideas for the Go Direct O2 Gas Sensor include

  • Test catalase activity under various conditions.
  • Measure oxygen consumption at rest and after exercise.
  • Measure the change in gas produced during photosynthesis.
  • Compare the rates of cell respiration in germinating and non-germinating peas.
