James Cashman Middle School serves approximately 1,400 diverse students, many of whom speak English as a second language and come from an underprivileged background. Within the middle school, there is a mathematics, science, and engineering academy that accommodates roughly one-third of the entire student body.
With the Vernier grant, the school will be able to serve students outside of the academy with more real-life, hands-on technology activities on a more consistent basis to enhance their learning of life science, earth science and physical science. In addition, teachers will be able to bridge the transfer gap between their science and mathematics classes by having students interpret the graphs and charts generated by the data-collection technology.
