The Manhattan Center for Science and Mathematics (MCSM) High School, located in the East Harlem community of New York, established the International Student and Teacher Exchange Program (ISTEP) for Science and Mathematics as an extension of its signature program, The Advanced Science Research (ASR) Program. ASR is a three-year research program for students to design a research topic, contact possible mentors, and begin experimental or theoretical research in a university laboratory under the supervision of faculty. Students in the ISTEP program are currently collecting water samples from the Hudson River and tree core and soil samples from the Tallman Mountain State Park. The Vernier grant will allow MCSM to provide each student with the hand-held technology needed to fully analyze the water and soil samples.
