Science and math educators from around the world will connect at the 2014 T3™ International Conference presented by Texas Instruments and the energy, know-how and materials they take back to their schools will ignite exceptional learning environments in their classrooms.
NODE+ is a wireless sensor platform controlled by a mobile device, such as an iPad, that allows students to explore concepts in topics such as Earth science, environmental science, and physical science. Sensor modules are available to measure temperature, light, relative humidity, and more.
Forrest Mims III submitted an innovative use about studying heat islands in our Fall 2013 The Caliper newsletter. He has recently published an article for MAKE Magazine about tracking heat islands with LabQuest 2.
While temperature loggers work well, they require you to note times and locations during a transect so you can analyze the data. No notes are needed with a Vernier LabQuest 2, my favorite data logger for serious heat island studies.
After making a temperature transect across a city, you can send up to 1,000 temperature measurements to Vernier, which will return a Google map with a color-coded line that indicates the temperature along the route (violet being the coolest and red the warmest).
The Potassium Ion-Selective Electrode can be used to measure the concentration of potassium (K+) ions in aqueous solutions. This electrode can be used for testing in the field and in circumstances where other
means of measuring potassium ions is cumbersome or prohibitively expensive.
The PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation) Sensor measures photosynthetic light levels in both air and water. It features a waterproof sensor head and can be used to measure Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density (PPFD) from sunlight and electric light sources. It is sensitive to visible light in the spectral range that is used by plants in photosynthesis (400–700 nm).
The Vernier UV-VIS Spectrophotometer is a portable ultraviolet and visible light spectrophotometer. It is an easy-to-use, accurate instrument, ideal for measuring the absorbance spectra of various chemical
and biochemical compounds. As a USB device, it plugs directly into your computer or LabQuest.
