- Go Direct SpectroVis Plus vs. Colorimeter
Though many of the investigations in Investigating Chemistry through Inquiry are written for use with the Vernier Colorimeter, all of those same investigations could be done with the Vernier Go Direct SpectroVis Spectrophotometer. The advantage of this device is the ability for your students to discover for themselves which wavelength is the best to use for an investigation. The Go Direct SpectroVis Spectrophotometer can read and display a spectrum from 380 to 900 nm, the entire visible spectrum plus part of the infrared spectrum. Students can look at a complete absorption spectrum of a compound. Once the best wavelength is chosen, it’s a snap to switch modes to continue the experiment at that wavelength.
- Drop Counter vs. buret
- You can perform a number of titration investigations from Investigating Chemistry through Inquiry with either a buret or a Vernier Drop Counter. When the Drop Counter is connected with a sensor (e.g., pH, conductivity), the software will automatically set up the correct data-collection mode for you. Remember that the sensor in the solution has a limit on how fast it can respond, so make sure to set the drop rate to between 1 and 2 seconds per drop. Also, stir your solution really well during the titration.
