Below is a good list of Vernier equipment that supports AP Physics 1 and 2. Since no two physics instructors teach AP physics in exactly the same way, this list may not have everything needed, and may include sensors that are not needed in your curriculum. You will want to add or remove items depending on the sensors and equipment you currently have, as well as your preferences and teaching style.
The Standard Physics Package is a good starting point:
Physics LabQuest 3 Standard Package (LQ3-PHY-DX) contains
- LabQuest 3 (LABQ3)
- Motion Detector (MD-BTD)
- Go Direct® Force and Acceleration Sensor (GDX-FOR)
- Go Direct® Sound Sensor (GDX-SND)
- Differential Voltage Probe (DVP-BTA)
- Go Direct® Acceleration Sensor (GDX-ACC)
- Light Sensor (LS-BTA)
- Go Direct® Photogate (GDX-VPG)
- Ultra Pulley Attachment (SPA)
- Picket Fence (PF)
- Go Direct® 3-Axis Magnetic Field Sensor (GDX-3MG)
- Current Probe (DCP-BTA) (two per lab station)
For AP Physics 1, you will need both Advanced Physics with Vernier — Mechanics (PHYS-AM) and Advanced Physics with Vernier — Beyond Mechanics (PHYS-ABM), as well as additional probeware. Order these sensors to add to the above list:
- Motion Detector (MD-BTD) (making two total for each lab station)
- Motion Detector Bracket (DTS-MDB) (making two total for each lab station)
- Go Direct® Force and Acceleration Sensor (GDX-FOR) (making two total for each lab station)
- Go Direct® Rotary Motion Sensor (GDX-RMS)
And, order this required lab equipment:
- Dynamics Cart and Track System with Go Direct® Sensor Carts (DTS-GDX)
- OR Dynamics Cart and Track System with Motion Encoder (DTS-EC) with Bumper and Launcher Kit (BLK)
- OR Dynamics Cart and Track System (DTS) with Bumper and Launcher Kit (BLK) and Cart Picket Fence (PF-CART) (two per lab station)
- Springs Set (SPRINGS)
- Friction Pad DTS (DTS-PAD)
- Rotational Motion Accessory Kit (AK-RMV)
- Go Direct® Centripetal Force System (GDX-CFA)
- Centripetal Force Apparatus Moment of Inertia Accessory Kit (CFA-MIK)
- Vernier Circuit Board 2 (VCB2)
The following sensors and accessories would ideally be purchased per lab station, but also work quite well for large group demonstrations. Depending on your budget, you may wish to purchase one per lab station or just one per class:
- Go Direct® Projectile Launcher (GDX-PL)
- Power Amplifier (PAMP) and Power Amplifier Accessory Speaker (PAAS-PAMP)
- Force Plate (FP-BTA) (2 per lab station/class)
For AP Physics 2, you will need Nuclear Radiation with Vernier (NRV-E) and additional probeware to the Standard Package listed above. Order these sensors a la carte:
- Power Amplifier (PAMP)
- Go Direct® Static Charge (GDX-Q)
- Go Direct® Gas Pressure Sensor (GDX-GP)
- Instrumentation Amplifier (INA-BTA)
- Diffraction Apparatus (DAK)
- Go Direct® Radiation Monitor (GDX-RAD)
- Vernier Emissions Spectrometer (VSP-EM)
And, order this required lab equipment:
- Extech Digital DC Power Supply (EXPS)
- Vernier Circuit Board 2 (VCB2)
- Electrostatics Kit (ESK-CRG)
- Resistivity Rod Set (RRS)
- Combination Track/Optics Bench (TRACK)
- Optics Expansion Kit (OEK)
- Mirror Set for Optics Expansion Kit (M-OEK)
- Vernier Emissions Fiber (VSP-EM-FIBER)
These lists are based on the full contents in the Advanced Physics – Mechanics and Advanced Physics – Beyond Mechanics lab books. If you will be performing a subset of experiments from the books, you may be able to strike some items from the list. See the table of contents pages (Mechanics and Beyond Mechanics) to see a list of equipment needed for each experiment. We also have a list of correlations between the AP Physics curriculum and Vernier lab books.
