{"id":11309,"date":"2021-02-18T12:13:09","date_gmt":"2021-02-18T20:13:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vernier.com\/til\/?p=11309"},"modified":"2021-02-22T16:58:17","modified_gmt":"2021-02-23T00:58:17","slug":"does-avast-antivirus-interfere-with-logger-pro-installation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vernier.com\/til\/11309","title":{"rendered":"Does Avast antivirus interfere with Logger Pro installation?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recent changes to Avast included the CyberCapture feature which paired with their cloud based analysis engine analyzes &#8220;rare&#8221; or &#8220;unique&#8221; executables prior to allowing them to be executed on your Windows computer.  Unfortunately, this can interfere with the timing of initialization of such executables in unpredictable ways on differing hardware.  The installer executable for Logger <i>Pro<\/i> seems to be one of the programs that is sensitive to these initialization issues.  <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Symptoms appear to include:<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Logger <i>Pro<\/i> installer taking an excessively long time to start execution.<\/li>\n<li>Logger <i>Pro<\/i> installer hangs (never starts execution)<\/li>\n<li>Logger <i>Pro<\/i> throws an initialization error &#8220;The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142), Click OK to close the application&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Logger <i>Pro<\/i> installer seems to start and then simply disappears.<\/li>\n<li>Logger <i>Pro<\/i> installer is erroneously flagged as carrying malware or virus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Logger <i>Pro<\/i> installer does not contain a virus.  Every Logger <i>Pro<\/i> installer (originating from Vernier sources) is scanned prior to release for malware.  Other antivirus products do not seem to have this issue (including AVG which also uses an implementation of CyberCapture).<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Possible workarounds<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Computer restart and retry.  Can eliminate some timing related issues.<\/li>\n<li>Temporarily turning the CyberCapture feature off in Avast and rebooting.  Sometimes an additional reboot on certain hardware may be required.<\/li>\n<li>Temporarily turning Avast off and retrying the install.  (rebooting may be required)<\/li>\n<li>Using a different antivirus program.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This problem first started appearing on computers running Avast in the Fall of 2020.
