{"id":3556,"date":"2015-11-10T03:05:51","date_gmt":"2015-11-10T11:05:51","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2020-08-08T11:57:38","modified_gmt":"2020-08-08T18:57:38","slug":"3556","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vernier.com\/til\/3556","title":{"rendered":"Motion Encoder System readings only increase or only decrease."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Occasionally the motion encoder system will work as a ratchet, with readings only increasing or only decreasing. This is not a setting in Logger <i>Pro<\/i> or LabQuest App; no software change can create the problem. The issue is between the detectors on the cart and the receiver.<\/p>\n<p>Try these things to troubleshoot, in order, testing after each step:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Confirm that the receiver is firmly in the the track grooves and is not out of alignment.<\/li>\n<li>Turn out the room lights to see if there is an interfering light source.<\/li>\n<li>Run the LabQuest or computer on batteries to check for a noisy power supply.<\/li>\n<li>Look for an obstruction on one of the sensors on the underside of the cart.<\/li>\n<li>Look for an obstruction over the transmitting LED (not the blue power light)<\/li>\n<li>Put fresh batteries in the transmitting cart.<\/li>\n<li>If you are using a 2.2 m track, confirm that the range switch on the underside of the cart (by the batteries) is set to 2 m.<\/li>\n<li>Use a different cart with the same receiver. If that resolves the problem, the cart needs repair.<\/li>\n<li>Use a different receiver with the same cart. If that resolves the problem, the receiver needs repair.<\/li>\n<li>If no additional cart\/receiver pairs are available for testing, contact Technical Support to set up a repair for both the cart and receiver.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Other issues with the motion encoder system include<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/til\/3170\/\">Motion Encoder zero drifts when used with LabQuest App on AC power.<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"\/til\/3271\/\">Motion Encoder does not measure distances over 1.2 meters.<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"\/til\/3331\/\">Motion Encoder Cart turns on but does not register motion.<\/a><br \/>\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Occasionally the motion encoder system will work as a ratchet, with readings only increasing or only decreasing.
