For intermediate users who have some experience using Logger Pro.

In this one-day, hands-on workshop, you will have the opportunity to explore ways to introduce engineering practices and principles to your students using Vernier sensors and software. During the workshop you will engage in several engineering activities:

  • Engineering Extension Activities

Extend your science experiments with engineering challenges. You will learn how a Digital Control Unit (DCU) can be used to develop logic-based, sensor-control systems. Practice controlling inexpensive DC devices (motors, buzzers, LEDs, and others) with the DCU and create an automated, sensor-controlled apparatus.

  • Structures & Bridges Investigations

Using the Vernier Structures & Materials Tester, you will learn how to conduct an engineering lesson moving from basic concepts of geometry and design, through testing of small components, and capping it off with a bridge or truss design contest.

  • Build Your Own Sensor Projects

Get a new perspective on the sensors and instruments you use in your lab, and an understanding of the science and engineering that went into creating them, by making your own! You will build simple sensors and learn how to calibrate them for use with Vernier interfaces and software. Examples include temperature, force sensors, and photogates.

  • Scratch & Go! Coding

Explore ways to incorporate basic computer science in your curriculum by using our Go!Temp and Go!Motion sensors with the Scratch programming language. Learn the fundamentals of Scratch and how to bring sensor data into your projects.

Note that the Arduino workshop is on the day following this workshop. Consider attending it if you are interested in further training on engineering education topics.

This workshop will be held Wednesday, July 12, 2017 in Beaverton, OR, at the Vernier office. The $99 registration fee includes lunch and a Vernier Digital Control Unit (a $61 value).
