Go Wireless® pH with iPad® - Tech Tips

Matt Anthes-Washburn demonstrates the use of the Go Wireless® pH and Vernier's Graphical Analysis app in an experiment investigating household acids and bases.

Today, I'd like to show you how to use Go Wireless pH to measure the pH of household acids and bases. This experiment is available as a free download from our website. You may be familiar with the method for measuring pH involving litmus paper. Well, there are several advantage to using a digital sensor to measure pH. Our pH sensors measure pH nearly instantly. They allow you to record your data and they provide for precise measurements for the pH. Go Wireless pH communicates with data collection software via Bluetooth smart. This low energy technology is easy to use and it yields great battery life. You can use Go Wireless pH with LabQuest 2 or with a device running graphical analysis.

Begin, by turning on your Go Wireless pH. The LED blinks red. Launch graphical analysis and tap to create a new experiment. Choose wireless sensors and find your Go Wireless pH in the list. Tap to connect to the sensor. You'll see that the LED now blinks green. Now, let's measure the pH of one of our household solutions. Remove the lid of the storage bottle. Then rinse the tip of the electrode with distilled water. Immerse the end of the sensor in this solution and you'll see that instantly, a live readout is presented with the pH of the solution. Wait for that value to stabilize and then you can record it. I'm going to make a note next to my value so I remember what I was measuring. This is baking soda and then I tap "Done", and you can see the recording and the note in the table.

Next, let's do another solution. I'm going to rinse the tip of the electrode again and now let's test ammonia. Once again, put the electrode in the solution and you can see the reading changes quickly. I'm going to wait for it to stabilize and when it does, I'm going to tap "Keep" into the data in the table. Type in the value or the values captured, I'm going to type in the name "Ammonia". Now you can see that the graphical analysis automatically saves all my recordings in the table. It saves the entire experiments so that I can go back to it at anytime. That's how easy it is to measure pH with Go Wireless pH and now I can finish my experiment.
