The Go Direct Materials Test Frame is a versatile tabletop system for authentic, hands-on materials testing in biomechanics, mechanical engineering, and materials science courses. Designed specifically for teaching and learning, the system makes it practical for students to run experiments themselves rather than simply observing faculty- and staff-led demonstrations. Students can also test materials, collect real-time experimental data, and analyze load-versus-displacement behavior—building knowledge and practical skills through direct experience.
The system includes standard fixtures for tension and compression testing and accommodates a variety of sample types and sizes. A ±4000 N load cell measures the force applied to the sample, while an encoder measures displacement as the sample is loaded. Together, these sensors make it possible for students to measure maximum load and generate load-displacement curves to characterize material behavior. Students can watch as data is collected, then analyze their results using the award-winning Vernier Graphical Analysis® app.
The Go Direct Materials Test Frame was designed in collaboration with the University of Delaware Mechanical Engineering Department and is featured in their E3 Biomechanics lab and design curricula.
