The PLTW Audiometric Test (Can You Hear Me Now) Lab Activity for Logger Pro is not automated. You will need to use a program to produce tones at different frequencies. To determine the threshold volume of a given frequency, you need to choose a frequency and then you need to increase or decrease the volume until you can just hear the frequency. This is the threshold level for that frequency. You will also need to know what the volume is at this threshold. Directions for how to complete this test are embedded into the actual student activity document within the PLTW curriculum. Please note that the directions for this exercise require you to determine the speaker volume.

You will need a Signal Generator Program to perform this exercise. There are many programs that can be used for this purpose.

Audacity is a free program that works on both Mac and PC platforms that can be used for this purpose. This program can be found here – http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Siggen is another free program that you can also use as a signal generator. This program can be found here http://www.techmind.org/audio/#siggen. Please note that this program does not work on Mac computers.

There are also signal generator programs that are available for IPads, IPhones and other devices such Android smartphones and tablets.

If you have a LabQuest 2 or LabQuest 3, you can also use the Audio Function Generator to perform this test. With the Audio Function Generator App the speaker volume is displayed as a percent. You can use that as the speaker volume.
