This article specifically refers to the use of the KidWind MINI Wind Turbine, order code KW-MWT, $49 and KidWind MINI Wind Turbine with Blade Design, order code KW-MWTBD, $65 with the KidWind Red Blade Set, order code KW-RED, $10. If you suspect your generator does not work and you are not using the KidWind Mini Wind Turbine nacelle or Red Blade Set, refer to TIL 3183: How do I test a KidWind generator?.
Some KidWind Mini Turbine nacelles have been shipped with the LED soldered in the incorrect orientation, such that the LED will only light if the generator is turned clockwise as you face the generator. However, the red blade is manufactured to turn counterclockwise. To test for this problem, gently remove the red blades from the generator shaft (you may need a flat-head screwdriver) and quickly spin the generator shaft clockwise and counterclockwise with your fingertips. If the LED lights when you turn the shaft clockwise, your generator was wired incorrectly. If the LED never lights, you have a bad generator. Note that it is necessary to remove the red blades from the generator for this test, as the greater radius of the red blade mechanism makes it nearly impossible to spin the shaft quickly enough by hand to light the LED no matter which direction you turn it.
If you have a bad generator, refer to TIL 3183: How do I test a KidWind generator?.
If you have a generator wired incorrectly and you are handy, you can fix this yourself. Gently remove the generator from the nacelle. This can be done by gripping the generator shaft with a pliers and pulling straight out while wiggling the generator slightly. Snip off the red and black wires at the body of the generator. Reverse the wires and re-solder them. Replace the generator in the nacelle, feeding the wires out through the bottom opening. For step-by-step instructions with photos, see TIL 3224: How do I repair a KidWind Mini Wind Turbine nacelle that is incorrectly wired?.
