Stepper motors are great for projects and can easily be used with an Arduino and our Digital Control Unit (DCU-BTD). If you have a stepper motor and want to use it with the DCU, first you need to figure out how to wire it. There are two basic types of small, permanent-magnet stepper motors used for projects. You can identify them by the number of wires. Bipolar stepper motors will have only 4 wires. If a stepper motor has more than 4 wires, it is probably a unipolar step motor.

The document below walks you through how to identify the wires on either type of stepper motor and connect it to the Digital Control Unit (DCU).
