Devices running iOS 11 and later can store photos and videos using a high-efficiency compression scheme called HEIF/HEVC. Video saved in this format cannot be displayed in Vernier Video Analysis, Graphical Analysis Pro, or in Logger Pro. Inserting such a video will generate a blank box, or a Movie Load Error message may be shown.

Apple is aware that many applications cannot read this format, and so they provide a “More Compatible” format option.

There are several workflows available that will allow you to use videos from iOS devices. Read about each in turn.

  • Import the video into Vernier Video Analysis on the iOS device, and save a .vmbl file to use in Vernier Video Analysis elsewhere.
  • Capture videos in the Most Compatible format in the first place.
  • Convert the video to a compatible format.

If you plan to use the video within Vernier Video Analysis, insert the video into Vernier Video Analysis while still on the iOS device. This path works because the Safari browser is on an iOS or iPadOS device is able to use these videos, and Vernier Video Analysis performs the needed conversion when the file is saved.

  • Launch Vernier Video Analysis on the iOS device.
  • Choose Import Video from the welcome dialog.
  • Navigate to the desired video and import it.
  • Optionally, perform analysis of the video on the device.
  • Choose Save As… from the File menu at upper left.
  • Download the .vmbl file.
  • Go to your Downloads folder, locate the saved file, and optionally rename it.
  • Move the file to another device as neeeded.

To collect compatible videos from the outset, set Camera Capture Mode to Most Compatible in iOS settings. The path is:
Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible.
Make this change before capturing videos.

For videos that already exist and have been moved to a non-iOS device, convert the video to a compatible format. See
