How do I connect my Chromebook and LabQuest via Wi-Fi?
If you are unable to have both the LabQuest and Chromebook connected to Wi-Fi, here are a couple of options for transferring collected data from a LabQuest to a Chromebook.
Option 1: Using a USB Flash Drive
- On the LabQuest
- Insert a USB flash drive into LabQuest.
- Choose Save from the File menu.
- Select the USB drive (if necessary), name the file, then tap OK.
- On the Chromebook
- Transfer the USB flash drive to your Chromebook.
- Launch Graphical Analysis app.
- Click or tap Choose File from the New Experiment screen.
- Navigate to the saved file on the USB drive, select the file, then click or tap Open.
LabQuest files are saved as QMBL files, which Graphical Analysis can open.
Option 2: Using LabQuest Data Share Web App
A LabQuest can be set up to present as an Ethernet device when connected to a Chromebook. This makes it possible to share data via USB as if the LabQuest were connected via Wi-Fi. This option is not available in the original LabQuest.
- On the LabQuest
- Open the Connections App
LabQuest 2—Tap on the Wi-Fi icon at the bottom of the LabQuest screen
LabQuest 3—Tap the Connections App from the Settings Screen - Tap the icon for “Viewer.”
- Make sure LabQuest Viewer is set to “On.”
- Check the box for “Enable Viewer over USB”, then tap Close.
- Connect LabQuest to the Chromebook by USB cable.
- LabQuest 2 only
- Tap the Network icon in the upper right corner of the Connections App.
- Note the IP address labeled usb0 shown at the bottom of the Network Settings screen.
- Open the Connections App
- On the Chromebook
- Open a new tab in the Chrome browser.
- Enter the IP address for your LabQuest, then press Enter.
LabQuest 2—use the IP address you found in Step 1f above.
LabQuest 3—192.168.235.1 - Press Enter and wait for the web app to launch.
- Once the app has populated, you can continue to work with the data in the web app.
- To export the data for use with other software (e.g., spreadsheet or Graphical Analysis app), click or tap export,
, and select download data.
- Give the file a name, select the appropriate decimal separator, then click or tap Download CSV.
Important: When the LabQuest is in the configuration noted above, the Graphical Analysis app won’t recognize the LabQuest as an interface for standard data collection, which can be confusing. To again allow the LabQuest to be used as an interface with Graphical Analysis, repeat Steps 1a – 1d, and uncheck Enable Viewer over USB.
