Yes, you can run our DOS programs in Windows 95/98, but not in Windows NT or Windows 2000.
The fundamental problem is that our MS-DOS programs were intended for use in MS-DOS. When an MS-DOS window is opened in Windows 95 or 98, a DOS shell is opened which is not really the same as MS-DOS. The same thing is true when you select the Restart in MS-DOS option on the Start Menu from Windows 95.
Another option is to move to our Windows software, Logger Pro. This would require that you have an ULI or LabPro interface. Logger Pro can’t collect data from photogates attached to the game port. If you choose to collect data using Logger Pro and a computer interface box, the same photogates you used with Precision Timer can probably be used (perhaps with an adapter).
Using DOS applications in Windows 95/98
This document describes how to install and setup a Vernier Software MS-DOS application for use in the Windows 95/98 environment. The settings described in this document are to a Shortcut file and not to the program or to the operating system. A red ellipse indicates all recommended modifications.
DOS Application will not work in Windows NT or if the resolution of your Desktop is set larger than 800 x 600 pixels
The following steps are based on an installation of Precision Timer into the directory C:VERNIERPRECISION TIMER. If you are installing a different program such as “Voltage Plotter”, make the appropriate name changes.
1) Create a folder named PT on your hard drive and copy the contents of the distribution diskette to that folder.
2) Delete the existing Shortcut file in the new folder.
3) Right-click the batch file for the program (e.g., Precision Timer uses PT.BAT) and create a shortcut.
4) Right-click the shortcut and select “Properties” from the menu. The property window has several tabs along the top.
5) Select the “Program” tab and make the two changes indicated.
6) Click on the “Advanced” button and make the change indicated.
7) Click “OK”.
8) Select the “Screen” tab and make the change indicated.
9) Select the “Misc” tab.
10) Make sure that both “Allow screen saver” and “Always suspend” checkboxes are cleared.
11) Click “OK” to apply the changes and close the Properties dialog box.
12) Right-click the shortcut again and select “Rename” from the menu.
13) The words “Shortcut to PT” will be highlighted. Type “Precision Timer” to rename the shortcut.
14) Double-click on this icon to run the program.
