Frictional Slowing

Experiment #13 from Physics with Video Analysis

Education Level
High School

Imagine that your little brother Charles, who loves to fool around, made a video clip of himself giving a push to a cart and letting go. The cart had a pad on its belly that dragged on the table as it rolled. Later your mother discovers that the cart has been damaged from falling off the right end of the table.

Charles swears he’s innocent and did not push the cart too hard. He is a clever fellow who claims to know his physics. He performs a video analysis of his video to “prove” his innocence.

Since you’re taking physics, your mother asks you to perform an independent analysis using Logger Pro.

In this activity, you will

  • Use Logger Pro video analysis tools to examine the motion of the cart.
  • Determine where the cart was when it stopped.
